Caleb Gindl went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer and an RBI triple while Wily Peralta pitched six strong innings as host Milwaukee claimed the opener of the four-game series.
Jean Segura, Martin Maldonado and pinch hitter Yuniesky Betancourt each knocked in a run for the Brewers, who have won four of their last five games. Peralta (10-15) gave up one unearned run on five hits and struck out seven while throwing 102 pitches.
Starlin Castro recorded a pair of hits and an RBI for the Cubs, who have dropped five of their last six contests. Edwin Jackson (8-16) gave up two runs on two hits and three walks over four innings, losing for the fourth time in five decisions against Milwaukee in 2013.
Gindl tripled home the first run of the game with one out in the fourth and came home on Maldonado’s squeeze bunt. Welington Castillo doubled to lead off the fifth and scored on Castro’s single to halve the deficit for the Cubs.
Betancourt’s single brought home Gindl for one run and Segura’s 20th double scored another in the sixth as the Brewers extended their lead to 4-1. Gindl belted his fifth homer in the seventh while Rob Wooten, Brandon Kintzler, Michael Gonzalez and Donovan Hand combined for three hitless innings of relief for Milwaukee.GAME NOTEBOOK:
Segura stole his fourth base in the last four games to give him a National League-leading 44. … Jackson threw 76 pitches - only 43 for strikes - and tied Houston’s Lucas Harrell for the major-league lead in losses. … Milwaukee has won 11-of-16 games versus the Cubs this season after going 13-4 against them in 2012.
