Omar Infante singled home the only run in the eighth inning to back 7 1/3 strong innings from Anibal Sanchez as visiting Detroit took the rubber match of the three-game series.
Sanchez (14-7) won his seventh straight decision, striking out 10 to notch a career high in victories and help the first-place Tigers open a 6 1/2-game lead over Cleveland in the American League Central. Sanchez gave up five hits and walked four while lowering his AL-leading ERA to 2.50.
Jose Veras and Drew Smyly each registered a strikeout in the eighth before Joaquín Benoit worked a perfect ninth to earn his 18th save in as many chances for Detroit, which won despite stranding 11 baserunners. Infante and Torii Hunter each had two hits for the Tigers.
Jose Quintana pitched seven scorless innings and scattered five hits for Chicago, which tumbled to its 11th loss in 13 games. Matt Lindstrom came on in the eighth and immediately got into trouble by giving up consecutive one-out singles to Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez.
Lindstrom (2-4) came back to retire Nick Castellanos on a flyout, but Infante grounded a single past diving shortstop Alexei Ramirez to plate Fielder with the winning run. It was Infante's 12th RBI in 11 games, but all of them have come in three contests.GAME NOTEBOOK:
